Modus – Furniture with Soul

Let’s take a look at the Balance Chair from Modus.

Modus has been manufacturing beautifully designed furniture for over two decades. In that time, they have collaborated with the world’s greatest designers and won multiple awards for their creations.

With headquarters and production facilities on a country estate in South Somerset, Modus produces all of its furniture on-site using a skilled team of local craftspeople. Its factory runs on 100% renewable electricity and uses a local supply chain to keep furniture miles as low as possible.

The company’s motto of ‘Furniture with Soul’ is a reminder of its mission to create joyful, sustainable furniture. All of Modus’s products come with a 10-year warranty and are built with ‘life-cycle thinking’, ensuring they have the longest lifespan possible and can be easily disassembled for recycling once they reach the end of their use.

Modus is proud of its ReWork program, which offers customers a take-back system allowing products to be remanufactured or recycled at the end of life, emphasising Modus’s passion for crafting not just furniture but a responsible relationship with our planet.

All materials used in the creation of their products are responsibly sourced. Hides and feathers are traced back to their origins, ensuring animals are treated ethically and humanely. Traceability also enables Modus to hold themselves to the highest quality standards, ensuring all materials used are the best they can be.

Sustainably sourced timber is also used, meaning the wood is harvested in a way that maintains the health and vitality of the forest ecosystem.

Modus see plastic in products and packaging as a huge problem, so they favour recycled plastic over virgin material wherever it is necessary to use plastics. The company is proud to be a Seaqual Initiative licence holder, allowing it to offer furniture upholstered in fibres made from reclaimed ocean plastics.

The Balance Chair

Developed in collaboration with the award-winning, London-based designer – Jonathan Prestwich, the Balance Chair represents the pinnacle of ergonomic design and innovation.

The Balance chair marries task chair utility with the comfort of an armchair. Its self-adjusting mechanism offers a dynamic and interactive experience, tailoring itself to the weight and movement of the user. With a height-adjustable seat and a weight-adjusted tilt mechanism, the chair meets the high standards of BS EN 1335-1:2020 certification, making it perfect for modern blended working environments.

Following the commitment of “Furniture with Soul, this statement shines through in the Balance chair’s construction and material choices. The base is crafted from cast aluminium with a choice of a polished aluminium or powder-coated finish. Moulded foam is placed over a tubular steel frame with an FSCTM-certified ply seat insert. The upholstery, available in a wide array of fabrics or leathers, brings a soft and welcoming aesthetic.

Recycled content constitutes over 43% of the Balance chair’s material makeup, with over 97% of materials being recyclable.

The Balance chair’s removable cover, which uses no glue, simplifies future refurbishment and sustains the chair over multiple lifecycles.

Modus seamlessly blends impeccable design with environmental responsibility, as showcased in the Balance Chair’s fusion of ergonomic excellence and sustainable craftsmanship. Their dedication to the planet is evident in every thoughtful detail, from material sourcing to recyclability, truly living up to their ethos of ‘Furniture with Soul’.
